Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ATS and why does it matter for my resume?
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System — software that most employers use to automatically screen resumes before a human ever reads them. It scans your resume for keywords that match the job description and scores it accordingly. If your score is too low, your resume gets filtered out regardless of your actual qualifications. Studies suggest over 75% of resumes are rejected by ATS before reaching a recruiter.
How does CVCraftery improve my ATS score?
CVCraftery extracts the most relevant keywords from the job description you paste, compares them against your resume content, and calculates a match percentage. It shows you exactly which keywords are missing. Optionally, the AI enhancement feature rewrites your summary and skills section to incorporate those missing keywords naturally — so you pass the ATS filter without your resume sounding stuffed with keywords.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?
No. CVCraftery requires no registration, no email address, and no login. Paste your resume and job description, get your results, download your file, and you are done.
Is my resume data safe? What happens to my files?
Your resume content and job description are processed in memory and deleted within 1 hour of your session. We do not store, sell, or share your personal data. The optional AI enhancement sends your content to third-party AI providers (Groq, Google Gemini, or Anthropic Claude) solely for processing — they do not retain it for training. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does CVCraftery work for all industries and job types?
Yes — CVCraftery works for any field where job descriptions use keywords: tech, healthcare, finance, marketing, education, engineering, HR, law, and more. The keyword extraction is based on the specific job description you paste, so it adapts to whatever role you are applying for.
What does the AI rewrite actually do?
The AI enhancement takes your existing summary and skills section and rewrites them to naturally include the keywords that are currently missing from your resume. It does not fabricate experience or qualifications — it reframes what you already have using language that matches the job description. The result reads naturally and avoids keyword stuffing, which both ATS systems and human recruiters prefer.
What file formats can I download my resume in?
CVCraftery generates both PDF and DOCX (Microsoft Word) formats. PDF is best for submitting directly to employers. DOCX is useful if you want to make further edits before submitting.
What if the AI enhancement fails or is unavailable?
CVCraftery has a fallback system. If the primary AI provider (Groq) is unavailable due to rate limits, it tries Google Gemini, then Anthropic Claude. If all AI providers are unavailable, it uses a mechanical keyword matching system that directly incorporates missing keywords into your resume. The core ATS scoring and file generation always works regardless of AI availability.
Will tailoring my resume to each job description really make a difference?
Yes — significantly. A generic resume typically scores 20–40% on ATS keyword matching for most job descriptions. A tailored resume targeting the specific job description can score 70–90%+. Recruiters and hiring managers also respond better to resumes that clearly speak to the role. The extra few minutes of tailoring per application meaningfully increases your callback rate.
Is CVCraftery really free? What is the catch?
There is no catch. CVCraftery is a free hobby project built by a software engineer who was frustrated with manual resume tailoring. There is no freemium tier, no premium plan, no credit card required, and no ads. If usage grows significantly, that may change — but for now it is completely free.
